This is open to anyone who wishes to comment. Seriously. Even if this is the first time you have visited one of my blogs.
I am in the process this week of figuring out what I want to do when I grow up. At 44 I figured it was about time.
For those of you who know me, you know I make my living writing from home now. For those who didn’t know me, now you do. Almost 7 years now.
If you want more info about my career ramblings, click here.
OK, so here’s the thing. I hate the technical stuff I write and I want to make a change. I have settled on creating a membership site. But I have several topics and I am wondering if you all can help me figure out which one has the most appeal.
Ready? Here goes:
- A Comedy Writer’s Site
This site would allow members (comedians, radio personalities, etc.) access to current event jokes for a monthly fee. It would also allow them to have exclusive jokes written for them ala carte. I would collect some of you blog friends to create the jokes and on any jokes used the writer would receive a royalty.
- A Parenting Site
While there are many things I am terrible at doing, I am an excellent parent. A parenting site would be a place with articles and tips of successful parenting for children of all ages. Again I would utilize the resources of other writers (like you) to help create content.
- A Marriage Site
This site would provide resources for married couples.
This would include everything from recipes for romantic dinners, reviews of getaway spots, sex tips, romance ideas for men and women, gift ideas, discount coupons.
- A Family Site
This would be a combination of the two above, focusing on building a strong family.
- A Marketing Site
I’ve written a fair amount on marketing and have written a good deal of successful ad copy. A marketing site would focus on how to market your existing business through new channels.
- Personal Success Site
This site would be about how to have success in every area of your life, rather than just one or two. Most people are naturally motivated in one or two areas, but are unmotivated in others. This membership site would help them find low motivation ways to be successful so they can have a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life.
That’s pretty much the ideas I am considering. I’m interested in your feedback.

i would say, just as a quick glance, 2 and 3 tog. which would be number 4 would be good.
there are lots of womens sites for these, but from a mans perspective might be awesome.
and #5 would be ok, but you would have to really sell it, because there is tons of that stuff out there.
i dont like 6, sounds too mega-prosperity churchy, even tho i know it wouldnt be a ‘christian’ site per se.
#1, i dont know if there is a want/need for that, you would know better….
people make good money doing those kinds of sites.
explain a membership site for me [and other non-techy visitors]…..

Thanks Kris for taking time.
A membership site is a site where members pay a monthly fee to access the content. It works out well for the owner because he can charge a small fee (maybe $15 – $30) so it’s an easy sale, but over the course of a year the individual members each end up putting in quite a bit of money.

Oh, one more thing: #6 is not about money. That is a part of it sure, but this would encompass family, health, spirit, mind, friends/social, etc. Money is necessary (as you pointed out earlier), but money without health or sanity doesn’t really mean too much.

you would also hook up the book thing where they could buy a book from your site and get a profit and other stuff, too, right?
I’m sure once you get the topic settled, the possibilities are endless….
oh yah and how much ‘christianity’ are ya thinking of putting out there. just asking…..

From reading your blogs (WC, MOBIAP, and the one about your redhead), I think you would do very well at 2,3,& 4. I agree with Krislinatin that a man’s perspective on marriage, family, and children is sorely lacking in the blog world. You are an excellent writer and have the ability to convey some really hard truths with humor so people can keep their heads up.
Best of luck

Okay. i’m just going to say this. Do the membership site — about whatever you want to do it on, of course (and i’m SO not a good one to ask to pick one of the choices you’ve listed..as well you know. But do that as a side thing.
You…can…write.
Stop worrying about how to go about it. Write a book. Just…write it.

I’m thinking the family thing. It hits three categories, and throw in a little of your patented humor and you’ve hit a fourth.
Then, after a while you could sell your family to hit the marketing thing.
Just a thought.

I agree that the family site would be great, especially from a man/husband/father perspective. Women write about this stuff all of the time, and most of their readers are women. It ends up being a very imbalanced situation.

2,3,4 and 6 all seem to be very closely related. Why not have a site dedicated to all of those concepts? It might help keep the potential customer broad and be a bit less risky than something too specialized.

I would not pay a membership fee for information about #’s 2, 3, 4 or 6, because it so readily available, free, on the web. With that said, I feel the humor and marketing sites would probably be the most feasible in regard to profitability. I wish you must success!

Ah, this is tough because you’d be so good at all of them. I think I would support the family/parenting/marriage concept as a whole. You’re so good at putting things in perspective, and offering solid advice. I like what Robyn said as well, the man’s perspective is sorely lacking, and the demand is certainly there.
As far as what people would pay for, that’s tough. Everyone seems to be out for the free ride. I couldn’t advise on that, particularly since I suck at making money.

I would like to hear about marriage and children from you. I would even be interested in the success story thing because I know you wouldn’t make it into a ‘name it and claim it’ thing. Praise God! hehehe… That would be great. But I agree with the person who said they wouldn’t pay because of the availability of this info. free of charge. But you could always get ad’s and pawn your books. I would buy one of your books. Love your writing!
